GAME #1
CINCINNATI -- Bill Henry (3) took the mound for Cincy with 2 outs in the 9th and the Reds clinging to a 5-4 lead. Wally Backman represented the tying run at second. PH John Christensen came off the bench for the Metropolitans, and grounded to 1B to end the game.  New York tallied first when Rafael Santana doubled home Hubie Brooks in the 2nd. The Redlegs responded with a pair in the bottom half off a Jerry Lynch 2-run, 2-bagger. George Foster's (8) solo shot in the 4th tied it at 2-2. Gene Freese (3) led off with a HR in the B4 to give Cincy the lead back. Later in the inning, starting and winning pitcher Jim O'Toole (2-3) singled in another run to make it 4-2. Mookie Wilson (6) brought the Mets 1 closer with a solo blast in the 8th. Freese answered again in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double, 5-3 Reds. PH Rusty Staub got one more home for NY in the 9th with an IF groundout, but the rally ended there. The sensational rookie Dwight Gooden fell to 2-3.

Game #2
CINCINNATI -- Ron Darling (4-2) fired 8 innings of 3-hit, shutout ball as the Mets whitewhashed the Reds 3-0. Jesse Orosco (5) closed out the final inning. Foster was the leading offensive performer with 3 hits. He singled and scored in the 7th. In the 8th, he doubled in a run. Keith Hernandez drove in the New Yorkers first run with a sac fly in the 2nd. Joey Jay (2-5) started and lost for Cincinnati.

Game #3
NEW YORK -- Frank Robinson went 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI to lead the Reds to an easy 8-1 win in the rubber game. F. Robby (5,6,7) cranked 3 shots out of the ballpark. Knuckleballer Bob Purkey (4-3) went the distance on the hill. Vada Pinson chipped in 3 hits. Walt Terrell (2-2) took the loss.

Game 1 at Shea Stadium

Dodgers 9 Mets 5

Trailing 3-0 after three, the Dodgers rally with 1 in the 4th, and 4 in the 5th against Walt Terrell ("Walt Terrible"). Winning pitcher Don Sutton (4-1) helped his own cause with an RBI single to make it 3-2. Willie Davis's ground out tied it and Wes Parker hit a 412 foot HR to put LA ahead for good, at 5-3.

After the Mets got one run back in the 5th, LA put the game out of reach with 3 more runs in the 6th as RF Andy Kosco hit a bases loaded, bases clearing, double.

Terrell took the loss and is now 2-1. Parker was 2-3 with a HR, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. For the Mets Keith Hernandez was 2-3 with a double and 2 walks.

Game 2 at Shea Stadium

Mets 5 Dodgers 3

This time its the Mets who come from behind to win it. LA jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three on a 2 run HR by Ted Sizemore (2) and a solo shot by Bill Sudakis (9). Both long balls came off struggling Mets lefty Sid Fernandez.

Alan Foster was cruising along for the Dodgers, shutting the Mets out until Darryl Strawberry hit a solo HR (6) in the 6th to make it 3-1.

In the 8th, Foster began to tire and the Mets sent 9 men to the plate, scoring four runs. With the bases loaded and the Dodgers still ahead 3-1, Manager Weiss brought in lefty Jim Brewer to face lefty slugger Darryl Strawberry. The move did not work as the Straw Man drew a walk to force in a run and make it 3-2. Moments later, things got worse for the Dodgers when Hubie Brooks cleared the bases with a clutch double, putting the Mets ahead 5-3.

Jesse Orosco came on and pitched a perfect 9th for his 4th save of the year. Tim Leary (1-0) got the win in relief. Foster (1-2) took the loss

Game 3  at Dodgers Stadium

Another comeback win for the Amazins. Dodgers took an early 4-1 lead against Mets starter Bruce Berenyi. Bill Sudakis tripled in a run in the second to put LA ahead 1-0. The Mets tied it in the 4th against Don Drysdale when Ron Gardenhire drove in a run with a sac fly. In the bottom of the 4th, the Dodgers scored three as Len Gabrielson doubled in a run, Willie Davis singled in another

and a third came in on a Wes Parker ground out.

The Mets comeback begain in the 8th, when they sent 7 men to the plate, knocking Drysdale out in favor of Al McBean. Danny Heep pinch hit a single to make it 3-2 and Mookie Wilson's grounder drove in a run to make it 4-3

Pete Mikkelsen was on the mound in the 9th looking for the save, as the Mets trailed by a run. The righty reliever could not shut the door, however, as the Mets rallied. Keith Hernandez led off with a single and pinch runner Jose Oquendo went to third on a single by Strawberry. After Hubie Brooks lined out, George Foster came through with a sac fly and the game was tied!

In the 10th, with two out and nobody on, Mookie Wilson hit a solo HR down the right field line

off Mikkelsen to put the Mets ahead 5-4.

Jesse Orosco put the Dodgers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to get the win in relief (2-2). Mikkelsen took the loss (2-1).

The Mets are now 14-13 as they battle for a playoff spot in the closely contested NL East. The Dodgers are 19-8 and continue to lead the NL West. Next up: The Mets play the last place 61 Reds. The Dodgers play the 57  Cardinals.

Marlins 3, Dodgers 2 (10 inn)

Patt Rapp might not have gotten the win, but his 7 inning dominance of the league leading Dodgers sure set his team up for victory.  Veteran Jim Bunning, making his first appearance of the season, was rock solid in 7 innings as well.  With the score 2-1 Florida was prepped to win until LA rallied to tie the game on a Ted Sizemore sac fly to left with nobody out and the bases loaded.  LA was in a prime position to take the lead, but Dennis Cook managed to trot in from the pen to fan Tom Haller and get Sudakis on a comebacker to end the threat.  When nobody scored in the 9th the game moved to extra innings.  Moises Alou doubled off of reliever Joe Moeller with 1 out in the 10th.  After Sheff grounded out to third for the 2nd out Bobby Bo was given an intentional pass to face Devon White who worked out a conventional walk.  When Zaun followed that with a walk of his own the Fish were up 3-2.  LA's started a rally of their own with 2 outs.  PH Ken Boyer singled to left.  His PR Billy Grabarkewitz moved to 3rd on Ted Sizemore's single up the middle.  Closer Robb Nen then decided to shut the door on the Boys in blue by enticing Haller to ground out to short to end it.

GAME 2

The "Singer Throwing Machine" spun a neat little 3 hit shutout to even up the series at 1-1.  The top 5 guys in LA's lineup each scored a run with the top 3 (Wills/Sizemore/Davis) each collecting 2 hits.  5th place hitter Wes Parker was the beneficiary by knocking in 2.

Dodgers 6, Marlins 4

LA jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 1 in the 1st and 3 in the 4th thanks to an RBI double from Tom Haller and a 2 out single by pitcher Claude Osteen.  LA's top lefty moundsman was not at his best today, but he was certainly good enough carrying a 6-2 lead into the 8th when he ran out of gas and gave up 2 runs (1 earned).  Rather than come out he gutted his way through the 9th to boost his record to 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA.  He also chipped in with 3 of LA's 11 hits.

Game 1  at Fulton County Stadium

The Mets blow 5-0 and 7-2 leads but come back to get the win in a wild one.

The Mets jump all over Tom Glavine in the first inning, scoring three on an RBI single by Hubie Brooks and  a 2 RBI single by the red hot George Foster. Mets add two more in the 4th as Kelvin Chapman draws a bases loaded walk and Keith Hernandez drives in a run on a ground ball error by 2B Treadway.

Mets starter Bruce Berenyi had another solid outing shutting the Braves out through five before he began to tire. Atlanta started chipping away at the lead when Treadway atoned for his error with a solo HR (3) off Berenyi, in the 5th. In the 6th, Atlanta cut the lead to 5-3 when Keith Mitchell and Otis Nixon singled in runs.

The Mets quickly got the lead back to 4, in the 7th, when George Foster hit a 2 run HR, his 5th of the year, to make it 7-3.  Atlanta was not giving up however. In the bottom of the frame, lefty swinging David Justice slammed a 2 run HR off  lefthander Tom Gorman(8) to make it 7-5. Francisco Cabrera singled in a run and then, with 2 out, Otis Nixon came through with a single to drive in the tying run as Gorman gave up 3 runs in a woeful relief performance.

Unfortunately for the Braves, their bullpen fared no better than the Mets as Mookie Wilson homered off Mike Stanton in the top of the 8th to break the tie, and Hubie Brooks doubled in a run to make it 9-7. The Mets added two insurance runs in the 9th when Wally Backman pinch hit a 2RBI triple.

Jesse Orosco, in the 8th, and Doug Sisk, in the 9th, shutout Atlanta to preserve the win for Gorman (1-1) who was credited with the win despite a Blown Save (2) and a lousy performance. Stanton (1-1) took the loss.

Mookie Wilson was 2-5 with a HR and 2 runs scored. Foster was 2-5 with a HR and 4 RBIs. Brooks was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. For Atlanta, Otis Nixon was 3-5 with 2 RBIs.

Game 2 at Fulton County Stadium

Once again the Mets blow leads, this time of  2-0, 3-1 and 4-3 but once again they come back to get the win, in an exciting game. George Foster was the hero once again for the Mets as he drove in 2 runs and hit the game winning HR, a solo blast, in the 9th to break a 4-4 tie. It was his second HR in two days and his 6th of the season.

The Mets led 2-0 after two on RBI singles by Foster and Hernandez. With rookie sensation and KOD strikeout leader Dwight Gooden on the mound, things looked good for the Amazins. And Gooden did not disappoint pitching 7 solid innings. Leading 3-1 going into the 7th, Gooden began to tire and 84 Mets manager Raylesberg made the mistake of leaving him in rather than go to a bullpen that has not performed well in KOD. The move did not work as Otis Nixon again came through for the Braves with a 2 out 2RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 after 7.

In the 8th, with Doug Sisk on for the Braves (yes- he was on both the 84 Mets and the 91 BRaves

the Mets took the lead when PH John Christiansen drew a bases loaded walk.

In the bottom of the 8th, Atlanta tied it as once again Tom Gorman failed in relief. Jeff Blauser singled in the tying run off Orosco, after Gorman had put a man on. The teams went to the 9th tied and Foster put the Mets ahead with his blast off Braves reliever Kent Mercker (0-1). Jesse Orosco, who had blown the save, in the 8th (2) picked up the win (1-2) with a scoreless 9th.

Game 3 at Shea Stadium

Braves 4 Mets 2

After dropping 2 games at home, the Braves win the final game of the series on the road, at Shea Stadium. This time it was the Braves who took an early 2-0 lead on a 2 RBI double by Rafael Belliard, off Mets starter Ron Darling. And this time it was the Mets who came back to tie it in the 5th inning - on yet another clutch blast by George Foster - a 2 run HR (off Charlie Liebrandt) for his third HR in as many games and his 7th of the season.

The game remained tied until the 9th when Atlanta broke through against Doug Sisk, sending 8 men to the plate and scoring 2 runs before Orosco replaced Sisk to end the inning.

Juan Berenguer (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings in relief for Atlanta to get the win. Sisk (1-1) took the loss.

The Mets and Braves are now each 12-12 as the KOD season continues. The Mets next play the 69 Dodgers while the Braves play the 57 Cardinals

93 Phillies take 4 from 84 Mets

Game 1 Phillies 1 Mets 0 at Shea Stadium

This game is set up as a classic pitcher’s duel. Two of the greats going head to head. Doc Gooden vs. Curt Schilling. Doc comes out smoking mowing down the first 9 hitters he faces and striking out 4. Gooden leads off the bottom of the 3^rd and is injured and must come out of the game. Ed Lynch comes in and in the top of the 4^th Lenny Dykstra greets him with a lead off 391 ft. homerun to right center for the game’s only run. Schilling goes 7.2 innings striking out 5 and picking up his second win of the season. He’s now 2-2 for the season. David West pitched 1.1 innings to pick up his 3rd save of the season. Ed Lynch pitches 5 solid innings giving up 2 and picked up the loss. He is now 1-1 on the season. 

Game 2 Phillies 12 – Mets 4 at Shea Stadium

Tommy Greene took the mound for the Phillies against Ron Darling for the Mets. The Phillies jump out to and early lead in the first by sending 8 batters to the plate scoring 3 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. In the 3^rd the Phillies scored 1 run 2 hits and 2 walks. In the top of the 5^th the Phillies sent 11 batters to the plate scoring 6 runs 3 hits, 2 walks and error. The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the 5^th sending 7 batters to the plate scoring on a Wally Backman single. The Phillies came right back in the top of the 6^th scoring 2 on a John Kruk double. In the bottom of the 6^th the Mets came back with 2 of their own runs by sending 7 to the plate. The big hit a 2-run home run by Ray Knight for his first of the season. In the 9^th score 2 on a hit and 3 walks. Mickey Morandini goes 3-4 with a Triple and 4 RBI, John Kruk 3-4 and 4 RBI’s. Tommy Green picks up his 2nd win going 6.2 and is now 2-0. For the Mets, Ray Knight 3-4 with a Home run and 2RBI’s. Darryl Strawberry goes 3-4.

Game 3. 

Phillies 8 – Mets 7 in 12. Veterans Stadium

The series moves to Philly Vet Stadium for a classic doubleheader. The Phillies send Ben Rivera to the mound against Sid Fernandez for the Mets. The Mets jump out to an early 2 nothing lead on a 2 run 340 ft. home run to right by Darryl Strawberry. The Mets pick another run in the top of the 5^th on a Mookie Wilson bunt for a single and steals second. Backman moves Wilson to 3^rd on a sacrifice bunt and Keith Hernandez knocks him in on a ground out. The Phillies get on the board in the bottom of the 5^th on a pitch hit 3 run home run by Kim Batiste to tie the game. With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 6^th Ricky Jordan hits a solo home run. This will be his first of 3 for the game. The Phillies score 2 in the bottom of the 7^th on a Ricky Jordan 2 run home run. A 375 ft home run down the left field line. The Phillies up 6-3 in the top of the 8^th, the Mets send 8 to the plate to tie the game at 6 to 6. The Mets score 3 runs on 2 hits and 4 costly walk. In the top of the 9^th the Mets take the lead on a Keith Hernandez single to score Mookie Wilson. Met up 7-6 in the bottom of the 9^th. Dave Hollins hits a game tying home run, his fifth of the season. Extra innings are needing to decide this hard-fought game. In the bottom of the 12^th, the first 2 batters are retired quickly. Ricky Jordan comes to the plate and hits his third home run of the game to win the game. I can hear Harry Kalas now!! Ricky Jordan goes 3 for 6 with 3 homeruns and 4 RBI’s.

Game 4.

Phillies win 2 – 1 over the Mets at Veterans Stadium

The back end of the double header was a pitcher’s duel. The Phillies send Terry Mulholland to the mound against Walt Terrell. The Mets open up the scoring in the top of the 2^nd on a Hubbie Brooks double to score George Foster who lead off the inning with a double of his own. With the Mets up 1-0 in the bottom of the 8^th and 1 out Lenny Dykstra picks up an infield single. The Mets go to Jesse Orosco to pitch to Micky Morandini (left on left). The Phillies counter with right handed hitter the Hot Ricky Jordan who hits his 4-home run in the double header by sending a 338 ft home run to left. In the 9^th David West comes in walking the first 2 batters. West is able to get a force out at second. With runners at 1^st and 3^rd and one out Larry Anderson come in to face George Forster and the Phillies luck continues as Foster grounds in to a double play. I say luck only because at lot of luck is involved winning 4 games against a tuff Mets team. Terry Mulholland pick up his 3^rd win and Orosco get the loss. 

Just some series observation. Ricky Jordan hit 4 homes runs in the double header and that season in real life he hit 5. In game 1 if Gooden does not get hurt I think that is a different game. He was pitching very well. The Mets pounded out 36 hits in the series compared to the Phillies 21.

Game #1
CHICAGO -- Back and forth game which saw the Yankees take a 5-4 lead in the top of the 5th. Bill Robinson doubled with 1 out. Joe Pepitone singled him home. The Mick singled with Pepi stopping at 2nd. Andy Kosco then singled in the Mod One. Chicago struck back in the bottom of the 6th with 3 runs on in IF groundout, a sac fly, and RBI 2-bagger from Chet Lemon. The South Side Hitman put the game away with 3 in the B8, highlighted by Jorge Orta's 2-run double. Orta led the Sox with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Pepitone slammed 3 hits for the Yanks. Bart Johnson (1-0) got the win in relief with Lerrin Lagrow (4) notching the save. Future White Sox Stan Bahnsen (1-2) took the loss.

Game#2
NEW YORK -- The Bombers return to New York where Kosco (3) and Bobby Cox light up Chris Knapp (0-2) or home runs in a 3-1 Yankees win. The real story though was Fritz Peterson (1-1) in the middle of the diamond. He fired 8 innings of 4-hit ball to stymie the Hit Men.

Game #3
NEW YORK -- Message boards have been humming about late-inning rallies and poor relief pitching. This rang too true for the Yankees in this rubber game. The Bombers scored in each of the first 5 innings, building a 6-0 lead. Steve Barber scattered 5 hits and kept the ChiSox off the board, however, he went high on his pitch count and was removed. Joe Verbanic and Jim Bouton (0-1) gave up 8 runs in the next 2 innings and Chicago won 8-6. The White Sox tied the game with 6 runs in the T6 with Eric Soderholm's (2) 3-run blast capping the explosion. Orta's (1) 2-run shot in the 7th provided the margin of victory. Johnson (2-0) earned his second win of the series in relief. Lagrow (5) again earned the save. Roy White (4) led the Yanks with 3 hits, including a 2-run HR.
